Sweeney Todd the Barber
It’s dead funny!

Press Release

Don’t miss the chance to see Water Works Players upcoming production, SWEENEY TODD the BARBER. Set in 19th century London, SWEENEY TODD the BARBER recounts the misadventures of the legendary barber of Fleet Street.

Based on the 1880 original by Didbin Pitt, this version bears little resemblance to the movie currently playing in theatres. Everything goes in Brian J. Burton’s boo-hiss melodramatic style - murder, mayhem, ghosts, revenge, true love, kidnapping, and “gourmet baking” …set to music!

The show features Ken Mastel (Sweeney Todd), Jillian Rusk (Tobais), Sue McCloy (Mrs. Lovett), John Russell (Mark Ingestre), and Carmen Bruce (Johanna Oakley), along with a large supporting cast including Tamara Alberg, Paula Bray, Dave Comfort, Ted Eden, Ross MacGregor, John Perry, Dennis Taekema, Kevin Vos, Debra Williams and Diane Wyllie and the chorus featuring Suzanne Embree, Anne Grabatin, Esther Hagen, Cassie Hogg and Amelia Jean.

The show is directed by Randy Douglas and Eldon “Steamer” Roth with musical direction by Tamara Alberg and Cheryl Deckert. To set the tone of the dastardly deeds about to unfold, the opening musical selection is an original work by BJ Castleman and was written specifically for this production.

Take one barber who shaves people “a little too close” and dumps their bodies in the caverns below Fleet Street, add Mrs. Lovett, who lowers her overhead by availing herself of this “free ingredient” for her delicious meat pies, sprinkle in a dash of Mark Ingestre and Johanna, the long separated and pining young lovers - mix well and you have a recipe for ghastly humor! It’s dead funny!

The production opens at the Wetaskiwin Memorial Arts Centre (5206-50 Street) May 1 and runs May 2 and 3 and again the following week May 8, 9 and 10. Tickets are $12.00 for Thursday and Friday performances with doors opening at 7:15 pm and curtain at 8:00 pm. Saturday tickets are $30.00 for dinner theatre with doors opening at 6:15 pm, dinner at 6:45 pm and curtain at 8:00 pm. Tickets are available at The Jelly Bean (Wetaskiwin Mall), Dr. Dave Hewko’s office, How Sweet It Is, Rainbow Corral or by calling the Water Works Theatre Info Line at 352-8383.

Don’t miss your chance to bone up on a little London history and tickle your funny bone at the same time; see SWEENEY TODD the BARBER.
