About Us...
The Wetaskiwin Theatre Society (WTS) was incorporated in November 2002. We are a community theatre group operated entirely by volunteers and have approximately 100 active members.
Since our first production, “Up the Down Staircase” in spring 2002, WTS has performed 27 full-length plays for about 12,000 audience members.
WTS has competed in the BigValley Zone One-Act Festival:
In 2006, “Soul Survivor” won Best Actor.
Our entry in 2008, “The New Step” was selected as the Best Overall Play and won the Best Director award.
In 2009 our entry, “The Bond” was awarded Best Director and received second place among five competing plays.
It is important to our organization to contribute to our community. WTS has:
provided actors for Wetaskiwin’s Disaster Preparedness Exercise;
participated in the City of Wetaskiwin’s 100th Anniversary celebrations and the grand opening ceremonies of the new City Hall;
provided volunteer support for Wetaskiwin’s Air Show.
WTS believes it is important to develop talent in our community. We have offered:
workshops through Theatre Alberta
an Improv Team
a Youth Theatre program
Our legal name is the Wetaskiwin Theatre Society, but our performance branch has been renamed Water Works Players. This change is in honour of our home, Wetaskiwin’s historic water works building. It is currently under renovation to create a 160-seat performing arts centre. Centrally located, and part of our city’s heritage, the Water Works Theatre will be home to all performing arts.
In 2007, the Wetaskiwin Theatre Society became a registered charity through the Canada Revenue Agency and we can provide tax receipts to those who wish to donate to our building project.
